The Lost Archives of The French Co.'s Louis Vuitton American Collection
By Angie Houston
We are excited to present a selection of color photographs taken by The French Co. during their production of Louis Vuitton products designed exclusively for the American market. Some of these items were commissioned by prestigious department stores such as Saks Fifth Avenue, Neiman Marcus, Bullock’s, and I. Magnin.
Please note that the photographs are imperfect—they are old Polaroids and snapshots from the 1970s and early 1980s, never intended for public viewing. These images were generously provided to My Poupette by Tom Johnson, the manager of The French Co., and have been scanned for inclusion in this catalog. There is no accompanying narrative or specific names for the items shown, as The French Co. used an internal numbering system for the American line.
With the exception of the Speedy, handbags from this collection were lined with calfskin leather. The exterior leather was often dyed pigskin, known for its durability and resistance to weather-related color changes. Much of the hardware was made from white metals, such as nickel. You will notice blank oval patches on most travel pieces—these were designed for personal monogramming.
During this era, a company called Mespo produced Louis Vuitton’s umbrellas, while Presto was responsible for the early tuck locks on what we now know as the Keepall duffle bag, complete with padlock and key.
Over the years, The French Co. used a variety of leather shades, ranging from burnt orange to tan, brown, and deep brown. The collection featured in this catalog was produced between the late 1970s and mid-1980s, after which Louis Vuitton’s International Collection emerged. Many items from the American line were later incorporated into the International Collection.
We hope you enjoy exploring this rare and rediscovered collection!
